Beauty And The Zinc!

January 30th, 2012

POP QUIZ!  Tell us… How many Botox® and Dysport® injections are performed world-wide every year?  (answer at bottom – but no cheating!)

Here’s a hint: Botox is one of the most successful medical products ever, with a more than 20-year record of safety.

As the largest provider of Botox Cosmetic in the Northwest, Calidora has been a big part of that success.  But even the most experienced practitioners occasionally have a patient who has a less than ideal response; either the effect is incomplete or the result doesn’t last as long as expected.  Though often it is simply a matter of adjusting the dose, we decided to look into it further…

One clue comes from the fact that Botox requires the presence of zinc molecules in order to work.  For this reason, it is possible that people with low zinc levels might experience diminished results from Botox.  There is    some evidence to support this theory and a supplement containing an enzyme, intended to enhance absorption of dietary zinc, has been promoted.  But our inner scientist wondered if simply taking zinc supplements  would do the same thing, so we did a study to find out.  A series of patients who had planned to have Botox agreed to be randomly assigned to either take a zinc supplement for one week prior to their injection or not  (people taking a multivitamin containing zinc were excluded).  Patients were seen at frequent intervals out to 4 months and photographs were taken.  After evaluating the photographs and determining wrinkle severity  (there is a standard way of doing this), results were tabulated and concluded.  Though the number of patients in the study was small, there was improvement in the zinc coup, with twice the effect at one week.  At 4  weeks, both groups were the same, but the effects wore off more quickly in the non-zinc group.

Whether this will be of benefit to patients who didn’t get a full response from Botox remains to be seen, but it would make sense to ensure your vitamin supplement contains zinc.  And since zinc helps to promote healthy skin anyway, there’s nothing to lose!

Quiz Answer: 3 million!

The verdict is in – resveratrol is a must-have ingredient to your anti-aging regimen.  This powerful, wine-derived antioxidant has been dominating the field of anti-aging research for years and the evidence for topical use for skin care is mounting.  Coming from the skin of a wine grape, resveratrol lives up to (and surpasses) the anti-aging benefits found in actual wine itself.  It’s anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce premature aging in the skin that can be caused by inflammatory factors (such as UV exposure).

Additionally, resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant and free-radical fighter.  A study performed by Dr. Richard Baxter, using a standard antioxidant test called ORAC and published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, found that resveratrol  was 17 times more potent when tested against one of the ingredients hailed as the strongest antioxidant in a skin care product (idebenone) in the same concentration!  Polyphenols, such as resveratrol, are the leaders in antioxidant efficacy.  This anti-aging powerhouse has also been found to reverse the effects of UV damage and protect from further UV damage, which we know is one of the primary culprits in the aging process.

One of the more interesting properties of resveratrol is its cancer-fighting abilities, tested in many types of cancers, but specifically in skin cancer.  There has been considerable evidence to support that resveratrol may help to prevent skin cancer in ways above and beyond antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways.

Moreover, resveratrol is a phyto-estrogen, a plant-derived substance, that works similarly to estrogen to help maintain collagen and moisture in the skin.  Because of the many qualities listed above, resveratrol also has anti-acne capabilities, based on more recent studies.

With its laundry list of beneficial properties, it seems logical that resveratrol would be a welcome addition and must-have component in your anti-aging line of defense.  We are thrilled to announce that we’ll be offering three new products to our anti-aging arsenal at Calidora Skin Clinics!  We will be carrying Veraderma Anti-Aging Creme (with 1% resveratrol) – a brand new, intensive skin care antioxidant which provides maximum protection from premature aging, revitalizes the skin and increases the lifespan of skin cells by 160%.  We will also be introducing Lipid Drops (fortified with known antioxidants blueberry and cranberry) to smooth and restore baby soft skin by replenishing the skin’s natural protective barrier (lipid barrier) and offer rich hydration.  To boost the benefits of your moisturizer, we’ll be including B Regenerative Vitamin B Serum which offers a revolutionary cell revitalizing complex to elevate hydration levels and stimulate cell turnover.  Stay tuned for these new products and their availability this January – you’ll be glad you did!
